Children's Dental Care: A Parent's Guide for Perumbakkam Families
Parents often assume that because milk teeth fall out anyway, decay in them is harmless. In practice, an infected baby tooth can be painful, disturb sleep and school, and damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Starting early makes every later visit easier.
When should the first visit happen?
By the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. The first appointment is short and mostly about familiarity — a ride in the chair, counting teeth, and guidance for you on brushing and diet.
Preventing cavities at home
Most childhood decay is preventable with a few consistent habits.
- Brush twice daily with a smear of fluoride toothpaste; supervise until about age eight
- Avoid bottles of milk or juice at bedtime
- Keep sweets to mealtimes rather than grazing through the day
- Water between meals instead of sugary or fizzy drinks
Sealants and fluoride application
The chewing surfaces of the back molars have deep grooves that a toothbrush cannot reach. A thin sealant coating fills these grooves and dramatically reduces decay. Topical fluoride strengthens the enamel. Both are quick, painless and need no injections.
If your child is afraid
Fear usually comes from the unknown. We use simple language, show instruments before using them, and keep the first visits free of treatment where possible. Avoid words like injection or pain at home, and never use the dentist as a threat.
Habits worth addressing
Thumb sucking or a tongue-thrust habit continuing past age four, mouth breathing, or early loss of a milk tooth can all affect how the adult teeth come in. Early guidance is far simpler than orthodontic correction later.
Frequently asked questions
Should a decayed milk tooth be filled?
Yes. Filling it prevents pain and infection and keeps space for the permanent tooth.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Modern digital X-rays use a very low dose and are taken only when clinically necessary.
How often should children come in?
Every six months, or more frequently if they are cavity-prone.
