What whitening cannot fix

Bleaching only lightens natural enamel and dentine. Anything artificial or internally stained needs a different approach.

• A single dark, root-treated tooth needs internal bleaching instead
• Surface stain from tea, coffee, tobacco or paan is removed by scaling first

Sensitivity and how we manage it

Short-term sensitivity is the most common side effect and settles within a day or two. We reduce it with a potassium nitrate and fluoride application after the session, and by spacing take-home wear if needed.

Making results last

Whitening is not permanent. Most patients hold a good shade for 12 to 24 months depending on diet and smoking.

• Avoid coffee, tea, red wine, turmeric and coloured drinks for 48 hours
• Use a straw for cold coloured drinks
• Six-monthly scaling to clear surface stain
• Occasional top-up nights with your take-home trays
